New research is continuously improving understanding of the ecological impacts of emerging aviation technologies, including small drones. As more research is conducted and the impacts are better understood, the approach to managing these impacts will continue to evolve, and new measures may be introduced.

Environment

The department has developed a Local Drone Rules Map displaying rules for drone use in national parks, state parks and other sensitive habitats.

The Civil Aviation Act 1988 and Airspace Act 2007 outline the obligation to take environmental considerations into account. It is not expected that current or planned operations of emerging aviation technologies are likely to meet the trigger for assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity (EPBC) Conservation Act 1999. This will be monitored as the sector grows and the scale of operations increase, to determine if EPBC Act assessments for drone operations are required.

The adoption of emerging aviation technologies will also support the achievement of sustainability and environmental targets for the aviation sector.
