You can now have your say on the Drone Remote Identification (Remote ID) Discussion Paper to decide how best to successfully adopt Remote ID for drone use in Australia.
Remote ID is technology carried by drones that can provide information about where drones are flying, and supports identifying drone operators and holding them accountable for their actions.
Due to the increasing use of drones in Australia, and around the world, there is a need for effective tools to monitor their activity. Better information about where drones are operating remains integral to the safe and efficient operation of drones, particularly as airspace in Australia will progressively need to accommodate and integrate a greater amount of diverse aircraft and users. Remote ID technology will be essential to support management of security and compliance, but also for the development of drone traffic management systems.
A discussion paper is currently being circulated for public consultation. The paper is the first step towards a potential mandate for drones to carry Remote ID, and in which circumstances. The paper:
- identifies opportunities and risks associated with this technology
- outlines options for how Remote ID could be mandated in Australia
- seeks feedback to inform detailed options for enabling legislation and/or regulation.
Comments and submissions obtained through public consultation will inform a Policy Impact Analysis process planned for mid-2023.
Consultation will be open until Friday 28 July 2023 and feedback can be provided via the department’s Have Your Say page or to drones@infrastructure.gov.au.
